FOUNDATIONS FOR LEARNING

Academics – At Family House we are proud to offer our students an academic curriculum that is holistic, rigorous, inclusive, and globally minded. In order to achieve optimal learning outcomes, we balance activities that are aligned to state standards with movement, honoring learning styles and opportunities to practice self-efficacy. One of our students’ favorite STEAM (Science. Technology. Engineering. Art. Math) activities was building guitars from cigar boxes. This allowed them to develop their math and problem solving skills while also encouraging their creativity. Finally, we believe that in order to encompass a holistic approach to learning, physical fitness is crucial. Therefore, P.E. and movement are a critical part of our school day. Examples of our diverse approach to P.E. include yoga, archery, crossfit, and swimming. Finally, we ensure that students are utilizing both sides of their brain by providing a strong art component to the curriculum.

These foundational principles help maintain the integrity of the school community and have sustained the vision for the 22 years it has been providing services.

Property

Family House Academy believes that learning is optimized when it is fun and when it involves the whole family. As a result, students, parents and teachers are encouraged to take advantage of the 6 acres of forested property on which the school is located. The instruction of the classroom often takes place outdoors where students are able to get their hands dirty by exploring their natural world. It is not uncommon for local wildlife, like deer, to enhance the outdoor experience.

Field Trips

Students get excited about monthly field trips where they get to learn in unique settings alongside their parents and teachers. Field trips are integral to bringing the topics of the classroom to life. Experiences like attending the Oregon Symphony, and exploring Mt. St. Helens and the Portland Art Museum instill curiosity within students and give them a vision for what is possible.

Camp

Every fall, students begin the school year by spending a week at science camp. This allows students an opportunity to engage in rigorous science content while also getting to know one another. Parents are an essential part of this week as it allows all the members of our community to unite around a common goal of providing the best educational year possible.

SERVICE-LEARNING PROJECTS

Service learning has been an integral piece of the Family House Academy foundation. It provides the platform for teaching children to love, problem solve and develop empathy. Our students experience the value of being part of a community as they serve soup at Love Overwhelming, collaborate with Kelso High School to make blankets for our teen moms, distribute food and hygiene items to our youth with the new E.A.T. Program, (Eat and Thrive) and honor our veterans by placing flags at their graveside.

Service learning is a 20-year commitment Family House Academy has made to each student, family, and the community. Service learning creates students with a clear vision for themselves, the needs of the community. This vision empowers them to be extraordinary citizens in an ever-changing world.

RAISING GLOBAL-MINDED CITIZENS

Students and staff learn about the people around the world as an opportunity to be inspired and challenged about the bigger picture. Staff members have traveled to Jordan to help with medical teams and have also traveled to Ghana, Haiti, and Niger to serve children and staff. These experiences have promoted global citizenship within our Family House community and have given our students an opportunity to have a global impact by raising funds, school supplies, medical supplies, writing letters and filling shoe boxes for the Samaritan’s Purse. As our world grows more interconnected, it is imperative that we raise students that recognize their potential for global change.

GROWING INDIVIDUALS

It is our mission to establish a pathway for students, staff and parents by providing opportunities to explore interests, new experiences and time for self-evaluation. We believe that this combination of values ignites a desire to be a life-long learner for all members of our community.

The Alumni from Family House are geographically widespread and include students that have graduated from and are attending University of Washington, Gonzaga, Washington State, University of Southern California, Seattle University, Lower Columbia College, the Armed Forces and Perry Tech.

By staying in close contact with our alumni we are able to enrich our community by watching their growth and successes.
